Scientists say a study of birds' social patterns teaches a valuable lesson about how a small number of revolutionaries can challenge an established order. Research shows that when a small number of birds act together, they each influence birds nearby -- and if the innovative birds are widely dispersed enough, they can shift the entire flock's direction. "Gaining power is about finding the right spread in your support base, rather than creating a rock-solid peak to the pyramid," Cliff Kuang writes.
