Martin M. Shenkman, CPA, MBA, PFS, J.D., an estate planner in Paramus, N.J., explains how life events, such as births, deaths and marriages, present financial-planning opportunities for some clients. A death in the family, for example, requires the updating of documents and typically, heirs want assets transferred as quickly as possible to the named beneficiary. However, Shenkman explains, doing so might be a mistake.
