Mountaintop fortress provides a unique experience in Peru

The Chachapoyas people, rulers of Peru's Amazonas region before the Incas, built a mountaintop fortress called Kuelap that has become a major attraction. Chachapoyas is a pleasant town with a central plaza and small market, but the fortress is the real draw. Kuelap has been compared to Machu Picchu, although it's not as impressive or architecturally elegant.
