Polyester straps are a central issue in the 2008 collapse of a crane in New York City. Crane rigger William Rapetti is being tried for manslaughter for not securing the crane, but defense lawyers say the problem lies with engineering choices and "questionable welding." The polyester straps Rapetti used held up in a test done by the defense team designed to simulate the disaster. However, Rapetti used four straps when the manufacturer called for eight, according to prosecutors.
