Women-owned firms boomed before the recession

The number of businesses owned by women and minorities took off in the years preceding the recession, census figures show. The number of women-owned businesses rose 20% to 7.8 million from 2002 to 2007. But experts are uncertain if the recession significantly hampered that growth in subsequent years.
