Andy Buchanan, a professor at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, explains that structures in Christchurch were built according to code and took into account strength, rigidity and ductility. The collapses occurred due to the tradeoff between ductility and strength. He suggests that "overdesign, base isolation, and damage resistance" be considered as ways to minimize damage.
