Calif. city's taxi sector is roiled by ride-sharing apps

Los Angeles officials have issued cease-and-desist orders to three companies that leverage ride-sharing mobile applications to compete with taxi companies, but the upstarts have stayed in business, asserting that deals made with state regulators give them authority to pick up passengers. Traffic experts say the apps could alleviate congestion on roads, but city officials and taxi companies consider the services dangerous to riders.
