Senator withdraws plan to expand D.C. voucher program

In light of the start of the fall term, Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., has decided to withdraw a proposal permitting Washington, D.C., voucher students to attend private schools in Maryland and Virginia. While Brownback had hoped the expansion would ease a shortage in high school slots, critics said changes could have compromised the results of the U.S. Department of Education's evaluation of the five-year pilot program.
