Corps set to dynamite Elk Creek Dam

The Army Corps of Engineers today is scheduled to begin dismantling Oregon's partially built Elk Creek Dam, a symbol of the ongoing struggle between environmentalists and flood-control advocates. A federal judge halted construction in 1987, with the dam only one-third complete, because of concerns over the endangered coho salmon that spawned upriver. A Corps spokesman says the dam's right abutment will remain intact in case politicians in the future decide to resurrect the project.
