Charlotte experiments with rubber sidewalk tiles

New rubber sidewalks along The Plaza in Charlotte, N.C., are part of an effort to ease pressure on tree roots. The tiles are made of recycled tires and can be flipped over when one side is worn. The rubber tiles cost about $80 per square foot, compared with $20 for concrete. Their life span is also significantly shorter than that of concrete.
