To effectively teach students, know their culture

To be effective teachers, educators must understand the cultural backgrounds of their students, writes school-improvement coach Elena Aguilar. To help teachers who are new to diverse classrooms, Aguilar lists several tips for getting to know students. Her ideas include researching the local community to see how it has changed, getting specific cultural information about students, connecting with community groups and organizations associated with those cultural groups, and holding a back-to-school potluck meal for students.
