Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup soccer games, had to come up with stadium plans that ensured spectators and players would be spared the discomfort of the country's typical triple-digit summer heat. The solution by engineering firm ARUP employs a reflective roof, solar photovoltaics to drive cooling equipment that moves chilled air in layers throughout the stadium and absorption chillers beneath the playing field's turf.
