Scientists have discovered that volcanoes "scream" before eruption. A study of the 2009 eruption of Alaska's Mount Redoubt revealed continuous rise in pitch in earthquakes that preceded the eruption. "After the frequency glides up to a ridiculously high frequency, it pauses and then it explodes," explained Alicia Hotovec-Ellis, a University of Washington doctoral student involved in the study. Researchers hope the study can help them better predict eruptions.
