U.S. retail sales fall short of forecasts

Retail sales edged up 0.4% in June, half of the 0.8% expansion that was the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Data from the Commerce Department show that consumers are buying furnishings for new homes and replacing aging vehicles, but they are cutting back on nonessential purchases, including restaurant meals and electronics.
