Why an Ore. clinic decided to ban drug reps

Doctors at a small practice in Bend, Ore., discuss the thinking behind their decision to ban drug company representatives in 2006 as well as how they feel it has worked out. "It's made us better doctors," said Dr. Doug Lieuallen of Madras Medical Group. Drug reps not only share information about safety and effectiveness but also help doctors deliver feedback to drugmakers on how their treatments work in real-world situations, said Kendra Martello, assistant general counsel for PhRMA. "If you take that away and cut off that open line of communications, then the worry is that patients ultimately could suffer," she said.
