Olympic swimmer comes out as gay

Australian Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe came out as gay in an interview broadcast Sunday on Australian TV. Thorpe, speaking with British broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson, acknowledged that he had not felt at ease with the idea of coming out until very recently, but believed it would set a positive example for others. The swimmer, who won gold, silver, and bronze medals at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, has received public messages of support through social media from fans and fellow athletes.
