EPA proposes new carbon dioxide storage rules

The Environmental Protection Agency, as part of its Underground Injection Control program and in an effort to update the 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act, has proposed rules regarding long-term underground storage of carbon dioxide. The rules would create a new category of injection wells for long-term CO2 storage, and would seek to ensure that CO2 does not leach underground contaminants into water.
