New estimates peg 1 in 4 California teens as dropping out of school

A new statewide system that enables California educators to track individual students as they move between districts or dropout has nearly doubled its official dropout rate. Under preliminary data from the new system, the 2006-07 dropout rate was for the state was put at around 24.2%, officials said, versus the 13.9% calculated for the prior school year using other means.
