AT&T joins move to no-contract options, earlier upgrades

AT&T will attempt to reduce its subsidy outlays for smartphones and tablets by offering a no-contract option later this month under which subscribers would pay full price for their devices on a 20-month installment plan with no down payment. Customers would be allowed to upgrade their phones for no additional fees after 12 months, the carrier said Tuesday. Once subscribers upgrade, AT&T would waive the payments on their original devices.
