Can animals decide whether to have male or female offspring?

Animals may be able to influence the gender of their offspring, a study suggests. The research, conducted at the San Diego Zoo, showed that animals that were able to skew the gender of their offspring ended up producing more grandchildren. It is not clear, however, what physiological processes enabled them to do this.
