Researcher sees U.S. becoming top oil producer by 2017

Harvard Kennedy School researcher Leonardo Maugeri sees the U.S. becoming the top global oil producer by 2017, spurred by drilling in Texas and North Dakota. Maugeri, a former industry executive, anticipates output surging to 16 million barrels per day by 2017 from 11.3 million barrels per day at present. "No other country or area of the world has even a fraction of this drilling capacity, and building up this power would require several years," Maugeri said.
