Topps' giant baseball cards combine NFC and QR for mobile outreach

Topps Co. designed giant baseball cards using near-field communications and quick response codes in an attempt to engage fans attending the Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest. Scanning the code directs mobile users to a site containing sweepstakes information. Mike Wehrs, president and CEO of Scanbuy, which provided the technology for Topps, says QR codes already enjoy high recognition among consumers, and adding NFC attracts those wanting to be at "the leading edge of technology."
