"Transient electronics" would vanish when obsolete

Discarded electronics that fill waste sites may become less of a hazard in the future if researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have their way. They're working on consumer electronics that disappear in water when their useful life is over. So far, the researchers have produced a chip on a base of fine silk that dissolves in water.
