BA exec says airline alliances "next best thing" to mergers

Simon Talling-Smith, British Airways' executive vice president for the Americas, says that the alliance between Continental Airlines and United Airlines adds pressure on their competitors to develop similar relationships. The result may be diminished capacity on international routes, he said. "In a world where you're not allowed to do full mergers, this is the next best thing," Talling-Smith said.
