CBO warns of greater financial burden in current health care bill

The main provisions in the health care reform bill do not reflect "fundamental changes" needed to cut costs and on the contrary would expand the "federal responsibility" for public health spending, Douglas Elmendorf, director of the Congressional Budget Office, told the Senate Budget Committee. However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the CBO excluded preventive-care measures and other cost-reduction proposals in calculating the impact of health legislation.
