ExxonMobil seeks reduced fines for Mont. pipeline spill

ExxonMobil is challenging proposed fines worth $1.7 million that federal regulators imposed against the company over a 2011 pipeline oil spill in Montana. Regulators cited Exxon for failing to take the necessary erosion-protection measures for the pipeline and for being slow to close an upstream safety valve during the incident. The company, however, said its precautions were reasonable.
