FCC's Pai outlines plans for E-rate reforms ahead of meeting

Reforms to the E-rate component of the Federal Communications Commission's Universal Service Fund must include a simplified application process and a commitment to emerging technologies, according to FCC commissioner Ajit Pai. The commissioner on Tuesday outlined his plan for the program's overhaul, saying the subsidy designed to support broadband for schools and libraries is worth saving but has become too cumbersome and wasteful. The FCC is scheduled to launch its E-rate modernization initiative at a meeting on Friday.
