Panel to review Pentagon cost overruns, acquisition process

A new panel will review how the Pentagon awards contracts and how much those contracts cost. Many Defense Department contracts end up costing more than double the original estimate. The panel, dubbed the Defense Acquisition Performance Committee, will produce a report that is expected to influence the Quadrennial Defense Review. Aerospace Industries Association President John Douglass said the panel should also focus on making the procurement process more efficient. He said the Pentagon should hire more employees if it intends to increase oversight of weapons programs.
