A proposed gas-tax holiday may need to be extended if gasoline prices continue to hammer the economy, said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee, earlier suggested suspending the federal gas tax during the summer months to provide relief for consumers. "I think we ought to seriously look at whether we need to have it be longer or not depending on what the economy (does)," he said Thursday.
