Analysis: U.S. banks provide a fuzzy picture

The biggest banks in the U.S. beat analysts' projections for second-quarter earnings, but they also reported increasing concern about weak demand for loans, sliding trading profit and a broad decline in revenue. Regulatory changes will bring uncertainty into the picture, as banks and government agencies prepare for rules from legislation to overhaul financial regulation. "With this process only just beginning, it was hardly surprising that the banks had little new light to cast on the likely costs of this red tape in their earnings calls," The Economist notes.
