CFPB eyes national standards for debt collectors

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is looking into drafting "robust national documentation standards" for debt collectors, Assistant Director Corey Stone testified Wednesday before a Senate committee. He said that while debt collection is necessary to ensure credit is accessible and affordable, the CFPB wants to ensure that collectors do not harass consumers about debts they do not owe.
