Md. district to survey students on social, emotional well-being

Montgomery County, Md., plans to expand its definition of student success beyond test scores by administering a survey that gauges students' social and emotional well-being. The poll, to be conducted this fall with help from Gallup, will ask students questions such as whether they "laughed or smiled a lot yesterday" or "have a best friend at school." "We're taking a holistic view of what school performance looks like," Superintendent Joshua P. Starr said.
