Scientists at Johns Hopkins University successfully extracted vascular precursor cells from human-induced pluripotent stem cells and implanted them into mice, which resulted in the formation of self-organized microvascular networks on hydrogel scaffolding. "In demonstrating the ability to rebuild a microvascular bed in a clinically relevant manner, we have made an important step toward the construction of blood vessels for therapeutic use," said study co-author Dr. Sharon Gerecht. The approach could have implications for regenerative medicine, researchers also noted. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
