A spectrometry device linked to a tumor-vaporizing surgical knife can instantly detect whether the smoke produced by the knife is from cancerous cells, according to this article. The device, the brainchild of Zoltan Takats of Imperial College London, can help surgeons know instantly in the operating room whether they've succeeded in cutting out all of a patient's cancerous tissue.
