Using shrubs and vines to cover fences may do more harm than good

Shrubs and vines that are intended to obscure tall fences could weaken their structure, requiring them to be replaced, writes Tony Tomeo, a horticulturist. Fences may rot when exposed to moisture from watering, or they could either be displaced by shrubs or torn apart by vines. A trellis may prevent some vines from climbing on fences, or a thick hedge could be used instead of a fence, Tomeo advises.
