Verizon joins early upgrade party with "Edge" option

Verizon Wireless will offer its own version of trendy plans among carriers designed to make it easier for subscribers to upgrade their smartphones, executives said Thursday. Under "Verizon Edge," subscribers will pay the full unsubsidized price for their handsets and qualify to buy a new phone every six months after they pay off at least half the cost of their current phone. Also, Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo said parent company Verizon Communications will raise its wireless capital expenditures this year to support bandwidth-intense 4G users and a new voice-over-LTE service.
