Going on vacation showed Gene Marks that his business depends on him to function, which makes it less valuable. The business doesn't have the systematic approach or the kind of guaranteed revenue sources that would interest a buyer, he writes. "A truly valuable business functions without the business owner," he writes. "It is an entity that can live on its own, at least for a while."
