Study links molecule to lung cancer in those who have never smoked

Adenocarcinoma patients who have never smoked, especially those who carry mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor gene, have higher levels of a molecule, microRNA miR-21, than smokers with this type of lung cancer, U.S. and Japanese scientists found. The study suggests "that there can be an effective treatment for nonsmokers whose adenocarcinoma shows miR-21 elevation," they said.
