Study: Americans are too literal about expiration dates

In a survey, 76% of Americans said they consider food unsafe to eat once the expiration date has passed, even if it has not spoiled. "The dates on food packages are very conservative; if the product was stored properly, it should last well beyond the date on the package," said a board member of ShelfLifeAdvice.com, which conducted the research with Harris Interactive.
