Common brands of snail bait can prove toxic to dogs

Some solutions for ridding the garden of snails carry hazards for dogs, including common snail bait brands that contain metaldehyde, a substance that can cause severe gastrointestinal problems followed by convulsions, coma and sometimes death. There are less-toxic alternatives, including compounds using iron phosphate, but the simplest answer of all may be to simply seed the garden with snail-eating turtles.
