Some airlines balk at raising fares in latest round

United and Continental began raising fares late last week, and other airlines followed suit. Southwest and American then started rolling back the fare hikes. "We rescinded this increase because other airlines also pulled it back," said Tim Smith, an American Airlines spokesman.
