McCain, focused on Syria, holds up Dempsey reappointment

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., says he won't approve Army Gen. Martin Dempsey's second-term appointment as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff until he gets answers on whether the military might unleash airstrikes on Syria, something McCain supports. "Do you think we ought to see how we could stop the war by intervening and stopping the massacre?" McCain asked Dempsey during a confirmation hearing. Dempsey said it would be "inappropriate" to supply an opinion on an issue being debated by elected officials.
