Review ties early weight loss to lower 3-year diabetes risk

Prediabetes patients who lost at least 10% of their body weight through lifestyle modification in the first six months following diagnosis had an 85% reduction in three-year diabetes risk, according to a review in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. Researchers found weight loss was associated with reduced disease risk in the placebo group but not in the group that received metformin. Patients in the lifestyle group also showed lower post-load glucose levels at one year compared with those in the placebo and metformin groups.
