Thorough monthly irrigation saves water, and leads to a healthy yard

Shrubs and trees may benefit from receiving thorough watering once a month during the summer, writes Allen Owings, a horticulturist at the AgCenter of the Louisiana State University. This could help plants develop deep root systems while saving about 10% to 30% on outdoor water use. New plants may need to be watered more frequently, but those that are established can thrive with infrequent but thorough irrigation, Owings notes.
