Judge says elected superintendent is in charge of North Carolina schools

A North Carolina judge has ruled that June Atkinson, the elected state superintendent of public instruction, is responsible for running the state's schools. Atkinson brought a lawsuit after Gov. Bev Perdue and the state Board of Education stripped her powers and appointed someone else to run the Department of Public Instruction in January. Educators and lawmakers are concerned that school issues may be overlooked as the power struggle is resolved.
