Newark airport adds advanced X-ray machines

Newark Liberty Airport terminals will soon have 3-D X-ray machines, allowing for examination of carry-on items without opening bags, speeding the security check-in process. "There are certain things like laptops and electronic equipment that we will probably continue to have you take out so we can get a closer look for tampering and things like that," said Barbara Bonn Powell, federal security director at Newark. "But there are probably going to be a number of times where the officer is able to resolve with the clearer image what he or she would have had to open the bag to see before."
