PEPFAR aims to reduce HIV transmission through transfusions

The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief has set aside $18 million for an initiative that aims to reduce HIV transmission cases resulting from unsafe blood collection and transfusion procedures in clinics and hospitals. The project will take off in Kenya and will focus on training health care workers on safe blood-collection methods. PEPFAR is looking to extend the project in other African countries, including Ethiopia, Uganda and South Africa.
