Study: Recession brought long-term shift in shopping habits

Recession-era financial pain and worries about the future spurred a sea change in consumer shopping patterns, according to a new report from NPD Group. Consumers are releasing pent-up demand for specific items and categories, and now more than ever view purchases as business transactions. "If consumers learned anything, it's that I can walk out of the store not buying something, and it will be okay," said NPD's Dee Warmath.
