When incentives turn to the dark side

Incentive programs must be carefully designed or they can backfire and hurt business goals, experts note. Badly thought out incentive plans can lead to unethical behavior, as witnessed in the meltdown of the mortgage business, in which some employees made bad loans to earn incentives. "Compensation programs are designed to support whatever the business is trying to do, not drive or lead the business," says Don Lindner, manager of practice leadership at WorldatWork.
