Va. district panel tasked with improving outreach to ELLs, immigrant parents

A group of school and civic leaders, educators and parents from Richmond Public Schools in Virginia met for the first time as a panel tasked with finding ways to improve the connection of Hispanic and nonnative parents with their neighborhood schools. The move, which follows a school-board protest by Hispanic high-school students who said they feel marginalized at school, is intended to help launch welcome centers staffed with individuals who speak Spanish or other languages and to develop a list of best practices for educating English-language learners.
